HMNZS Hinau entering Whangaroa Harbour, Northland. Painted by Susan Worthington, 1989. Acrylic on canvas.
This painting hung for many years on the walls of the law office of John Rust. Rust served in the Royal New Zealand Naval Volunteer Reserves (RNZNVR) reaching
the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He served on HMNZS Hinau as Executive Officer (XO) in the mid 1980s. In 1989 he commissioned well-known New Zealand botanical artist, Susan Worthington, to paint the ship from an offical Defence Force photograph.
HMNZS Hinau (P3556) was an inshore patrol craft which saw service with the RNZN between 1985 and 2007. It was attached to HMNZS Ngapona the Auckland branch of the RNZNVR. It was used in local waters for training purposes including seamanship and navigation training as well as fisheries patrol and supporting larger naval exercises.
Donated by John Rust.
