Athol Grieve joined the New Zealand Division pf the Royal Navy in 1927 as a Stoker 2nd Class having previously been a member of the Royal Naval Reserve. He served mainly in cruisers including HMS' Dunedin, Diomede, Achilles, and HMNZS Gambia, as well as the shore base HMNZS Philomel. He was discharged as a Stoker 1st Class in 1945 and died in 1963

  • Royal Naval Long Service and Good Conduct Medal 1937-1948 - Originally awarded for 21 years exemplary conduct, but the period was reduced to 10 years in 1874, then later increased to 15 years. In March 1981 commissioned officers became eligible after 15 years service, provided at least twelve of those were served in the ranks.
