Percy Hurley joined the Royal New Zealand Navy as a stoker in 1950. He served afloat onboard the cruisers, Bellona, Black Prince and Royalist; the frigates, Kaniere, Hawea, Rotiti and Pukaki (including at least one deployment to Korean waters during the war) and the survey ship Lachlan. At the end of his time in the Navy he was seconded to the Singaporean Navy as an instructor in basic mechanical engineering for which he was awarded the Singaporean Military Good Service Medal.
