Terence Hutchins joined the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in 1933. He spent all his sea time in the cruisers Diomede, Achilles - including the Battle of the River Plate - and Leander. He died on active service following an operation for appendicitis in the hospital in Port Vila, Solomon Islands in 1942.
