Whilst serving in the RNZN during the Korean War on board HMNZS Rotoiti, in 11th July 1951 a raiding party under the command of Lieutenant Webber; including able seamen's Button and Norman Scholes attacked enemy positions at Sogon-Ni Point on the North Korean coast supported by the Rotoiti lying about 1800m offshore. Button and Scholes scaled the cliff, killing one and capturing two North Korean soldiers. They successfully withdrew under fire and returned safely to the ship with their prisoners. This was described in several official sources as a classic example of a great raid. It was for this reason Button was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal in May 1952.
