The Navy Museum is restoring the 19th Century mine stores on the Museum site.
The restoration will ensure the character and integrity of the mine stores is retained and protected for future generations to enjoy. An archaeologist has been appointed to monitor all work on the project. Within the existing structures, we will create two new galleries and a modern learning space. This will increase the Museum’s public exhibition space by 60%.
The new galleries will focus on telling the story of the history of the Museum site and the contemporary New Zealand Navy. Work will begin on the restoration of the mine stores in early September, with full fit out of the galleries and new learning space expected to be completed by June 2020. We plan to open the new spaces to the community in July/August 2020.
A small exhibition focused on the restoration project will be installed in the Museum’s temporary gallery in the next few weeks.
