Gerry Wright joined the Royal New Zealand Navy as a 16 year old Seaman Boy, Second Class, in 1955. He was later promoted through the Upper Yardman Scheme to officer rank. Gerry retired in 1981 when informed that he was too old to go to sea. During his naval career he took part in the story of this book, commanded several naval ships and was trained as a Blind Helicopter Controller and Principal Warfare Officer.
