HMNZS Royalist (Improved Dido-class cruiser)
Service aboard – 7 January 1963 – 15 October 1964
February 1963 – guard ship for Waitangi Day celebrations
February 1963 – March 1963 voyage to Singapore for Far East Deployment. Royalist would be based at Singapore. Conducted training with Royal Australian Navy and Royal Navy vessels.
April 1963 Conducts Exercise SEA SERPENT with HMS Hermes
May 1963 Voyages to Manilla, Hong Kong, Kure
June 1963 Arrives in Tokyo then sails back to Singapore via Hong Kong with RN vessels. Leaves Singapore and sails back to Auckland arriving in July 1963
August 1963 Conducts exercises in Australia
September – December 1963 – arrives back to NZ and then voyages around NZ
January 1964 Guardship for Auckland Anniversary Celebrations
February 1964 – April 1964 remains in Auckland
April 1964 – May 1964 Vice Regal Visit – NZ Governor General boards the ship and visits Raoul Island, Cook Islands, Niue, American Samoa, Perhyn Island, Papeete, Manuae Island, Palmerston Island, and Atiu Island.
May 1964 – August 1964 Visits Fiji then on to Philippines to visit the major American naval base at Subic Bay then on Hong Kong and Bangkok in June and arrived in Singapore in July. Left Singapore after a week there and returned to NZ via Darwin and Brisbane where the then Minister of Defence and his wife were embarked and disembarked at Russell. The ship arrived on 3 August 1964 and went into refit.
HMNZS Taranaki (Type 12/Rothsay-class frigate)
Service aboard – 14 April 1965 – 9 January 1967
May 1965 – ship recommissioned into RNZN service after refit.
May – July 1965 operated from Auckland and took part in Exercise AUCKEX and LONGEX as well as working up after refit.
August – September 1965 Leaves Auckland and arrives in Pago Pago (American Samoa) then onto Pearl Harbour. Conducts exercises and training while there with United States Navy.
October – November 1965 Leaves Pearl Harbour and visits Midway, Guam, Labuan and reaches Singapore. Undertakes operational patrols in the Johore area. Remains based at Singapore.
December 1965 – February 1966 Remains on station based in Singapore.
February 1966 – April 1966 leaves Singapore for Labuan then Tawau area then arrives in Hong Kong in March. Returns to Singapore in April.
April 1966 – May 1966 departs Singapore and sails to Auckland via Labuan, Manus, Townsville reaching Auckland in Early May.
May 1966 – September 1966 Based at Auckland – voyages into the Southern Ocean to support a medivac from Antarctica in June. Visits Dunedin at the same time. Carries out training exercises but had to enter drydock for emergency repairs in September.
October 1966 – sails to Sydney to take part in Exercise RUN UP with Royal Australian Navy.
November 1966 – January 1967 – returns from Australia and remains in Auckland area undertaking training. Took a VIP party to New Plymouth in December.
HMNZS Lachlan (River-class frigate adapted for surveying)
Service from 3 October 1967 – 31 October 1967
Departed Auckland on the 3rd and arrived in Gisborne on the 8th.
9 October 1967 took part in the commemoration of Captain Cook’s landing on Kaiti Beach.
Between the 9th and 15th October the ship undertook a survey of Kapiti
Returned to Auckland on the 20th.
HMNZS Otago (Type 12/Rothsay-class Frigate)
Service aboard 1 November 1967 – 9 February 1969
4 November 1969 – 10 May 1970
November 1967 ship had been in for a refit and underwent trials off Auckland through to February 1968
February 1968 – takes part in Waitangi Day. Voyages to Sydney for training and returns at the end of the month.
March 1968 – remains in Auckland until end of the month then departs for Raoul Island then Pago Pago.
April – May 1968 arrives Pearl Harbour and undertakes training
June 1968 left Pearl Harbour and sailed via Midway, Guam, Labuan, and arrived in Singapore.
July – August 1968 based in Singapore – sails to Bangkok and returns to Singapore
August 1968 – October 1968 – leaves Singapore via Jason Bay and sails to Hong Kong then goes to Japan visiting the port of Sasebo. From there she sails to Chinhae and Inchon both ports in Korea. Leaves from Korea and returns to Singapore via Hong Kong.
October – November 1968 remains based at Singapore.
November-December 1968 leaves Singapore for Auckland via Darwin, Port Moresby, Honiara, Suva, and Raoul Island.
December 1968 – February 1969 Remains in Auckland area. Takes part in Waitangi Day celebrations in February 1969.
March 1970 – May 1970 Based in Auckland. Undergoes a series of sea trials in the Hauraki Gulf.
