Petty Officer Wren Joan Smith (Compiler)

Smith joined the Navy in January 1943 as a part of the Women’s Royal New Zealand Naval Service (WRNZNS, also known as Wrens), and served until May 1946. The photos are all taken during the Second World War on the Homefront, including at Fort Takapuna. They feature groups of Wrens, performing activities both official (‘on Parade’ – marching, ‘awaiting Inspection’ drill) and unofficial (Christmas preparations, gardening, and sailing).
