Kathryn is a long-term resident of Narrow Neck. Her connection with the museum began whilst working for Defence Estate and Infrastructure and then as a free-lance photographer covering several of the museum’s events and activities. She joined the museum as a casual Guide Host in 2025.
What attracted you to working at the Navy Museum?
The museum is a world-class facility. Since the day I arrived in New Zealand I loved visiting this museum and the staff are brilliant!
What do you enjoy most about your role?
I love meeting people from different backgrounds, ethnicities, local and international from babies to veterans.
What do you enjoy least?
Not being able to finish something and if I can’t help someone, I struggle with that.
Name the most unexpected fact you have learnt since taking up your role at the Museum.
That HMS New Zealand was effectively donated by New Zealand to Great Britain. Growing up in Wales I never learnt about that. Makes me wonder why we weren’t taught about the contribution of smaller nations.
Name your favourite object in the Museum and explain why you chose it.
My favourite object is the mini moke, firstly because how on earth did the museum team get it into the gallery! And, secondly, it’s rather unexpected to find a vehicle in a Navy Museum and they’re quite unique as there’s not many left in the world.
What’s the most memorable thing you have done since being at the Museum?
Every day is a new day where I get the opportunity to learn something different. If I had to pick one moment it would be getting to meet the Operation Grapple veterans when they came to the launch of the We Were There exhibition and again when they received their British Nuclear Test Medal from the British High Commissioner.
Name the funniest moment since you joined the Museum?
It has to be hearing the things kids say – they’re often hilarious. And, also just how fascinated they are by the store, they’re constantly harassing their parents to buy something.
How do you enjoy spending your time outside work?
I love photography, walking my dog with my hubby and catching up with our dog walkers’ group at Fort Takapuna.
