Meet Ashleigh

What attracted you to working at the Navy Museum?
I am extremely proud to have had a parent in the Navy while I grew up. The Navy has been a big part of our lives and provided so many opportunities for our family. Also, as a local I was able to watch the development of Torpedo Bay many years ago where it changed into a destination for locals and visitors alike. I have spent many hours visiting especially with my children doing the fantastic school holiday program activities. But also, could there be a more beautiful spot to work?

What do you enjoy most about your role?
The people – both the staff and the visitors! We are a diverse bunch of people and have an equally diverse group of visitors which makes for some great stories and conversations.

What do you enjoy least?
There is nothing ‘unenjoyable’ per se but there can definitely be some moments which can be emotionally tough; we can hear some harrowing stories, but it is a privilege to be able to provide a space and a listening ear for these visitors to recollect their families’ stories.

Name the most unexpected fact you have learnt since taking up your role at the Museum
You can never know everything – no matter how much research you might do! There are often times when a visitor will tell of their firsthand experience of a story they have been told and the story and the history of the object grows.

Name your favourite object in the Museum and explain why you chose it.
My favourite object in the museum would be the museum’s Mauri. I was fortunate enough to attend the ceremony where it was brought over by waka from the old museum at Spring Street when Torpedo Bay opened, and it has been my favourite since that day.

What’s the most memorable thing you have done since being at the Museum?

It would be hard to pinpoint one memorable thing but there are many special stories that we are fortunate enough to hear. We also get some pretty cool visitors! Whether its veterans, sailors from Korea, BCTs, a local family, (the list goes on!) there is always something or someone who leaves an impression.

Name the funniest moment since you joined the Museum?
I have been lucky enough to be behind the scenes at some of the evening functions where some great stories come out by the end of the night.

How do you enjoy spending your time outside work?
My favourite thing to do is spend time with my family. I have two amazing young daughters and I am so fortunate to be their mum. If I’m not with them it’s likely I am walking the peninsula with my very cute but very naughty golden retriever.
